Take the “MM” numbers on the side of a lens. If the lens itself is able to be manipulated, these numbers denote the camera’s focal length in millimeters. Obviously your camera is going to be a lot farther from the object you are capturing than just a couple of millimeters. This actually means that the distance from the front of your camera’s lens to the side sensor of your camera, in millimeters. The larger the number of millimeters, such as 12mm or 50mm, means that you will have access to more magnified telephoto shots. This is perfect if you will be taking photos or setting up cameras that will be viewing subjects from large distances.
The ratio numbers on the side of a lens are where the aperture comes into play. Not sure what the aperture of a camera is? It’s the opening that allows light to come in through the camera. Each opening is different and has a range of different sizes, and these sizes are represented through the ratio numbers. The aperture size directly affects how much light will be allowed through the lens, and this is how the ratio will show how much your camera is able to handle. For example, if you see a ratio on the side of your camera’s lens that says 1:5.6, that shows the widest aperture available for that camera’s particular lens.
That pesky “f” number is always perplexing. Believe it or not though, the “f” number is related to the aperture as well. The f number actually lets you know about your aperture’s value. The f number on your lens will let you know if your lens is classified as “fast” or “slow”. The difference between these “fast” and “slow” values indicates the speed of your shutter and how it can effectively bring light in through it. If you have a fast shutter speed, you will be able to capture sharper images in lower light settings. Slower shutter speed, naturally, means the opposite.
All of these aspects are things to think about when getting a new camera or looking into the specs of a camera for a security system. Whether it be for photography or security purposes, knowing about the product before you rent or buy is going to make a world of difference to your wallet.
